By accepting these terms and conditions and completing the booking process you are entering a legal agreement and we look forward to welcoming you to our hostel.

Booking Enquiries


Booking enquiries can be made by phone, e mail or online.


Please let us know the mix of your party and ages of any young people under the age of 16.
Young people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult.
SORRY NO STAG OR HEN PARTIES. We reserve the right to cancel bookings or ask the party to leave, without refund, if we find they are stag or hen parties.
Ambleside Backpackers reserve the right to decline any booking at its discretion.

Only individuals and parties up to 10 people may book on line via our website.

Reservation/Cancellation Policy


Individuals and  Groups up to 10 People

Bookings require a deposit £5.00 per person or £5.00 X number of beds in a room booked for private use.
Refunds; The booking deposit is non refundable.
If you notify us at least 48 hours BEFORE noon on the day of arrival of a reduction in your booking requirements there will be no further charge for the beds cancelled (smaller rooms may be offered for room bookings at the managers discretion if available, otherwise the full room charge will be due as booked) – If you do not inform us 48 hours before noon on the day of arrival you will be liable for the whole cost of the first nights stay if you do not check in with us for any reason.

If you wish to make a deposit payment by cheque or bank transfer we will require a deposit of the full 1st nights accommodation fee.

Bookings made within 48 hours of arrival by phone – full payment is required

If you wish to book a private room and pay for any unoccupied beds you may do so.

Balance of payment for any subsequent nights booked is due on arrival.

All Special Offers to be paid in full at time of booking.

Large Group Bookings– 11+ People

A  booking deposit of the first nights accommodation, based on provisional numbers, is required on booking by card.

A Provisional Booking can be held, subject to agreement with the hostel manager, for a short period awaiting the deposit payment.

Final numbers to be confirmed no later than 28 days before arrival.

Balance of payment shall be paid no later than 28 days before arrival by Bank Transfer, cheque or card .

Decrease in size of group within 27 days and arrival – No refund unless the beds/rooms can be re-sold. In which case a partial refund may be given.

Cancellation of whole 20+ Group booking:

  • 28+ days before arrival = Loss of deposit
  • 27–14 days before arrival = Refund less cost of 1st nights stay
  • 14 days or less = No refund

We recommend you take out holiday insurance to cover your cancellation costs.

Room Allocation and Dorm Sizes


The allocation of rooms is subject to availability and the managers’ discretion.

If you are booking a dorm bed, dorm size cannot be guaranteed and may vary depending on bookings received.

We are a hostel and our budget accommodation depends on fullest occupancy when possible. If you wish to book a private room and pay for any unoccupied beds you may do so, otherwise all beds will be open to let to other guests.

Families with children under 16 must book a room for their sole use.,/h3>

Young People (Under 18 Years Old)


The hostel is primarily an adult environment. We do not provide any play areas or other child facilities. However children are welcome provided they:

  • Are supervised at all times particularly in the public spaces and shower rooms.
  • Share a room with a parent or supervising adult and not with any other adult unconnected with your booking.
  • For safety reasons do not use the top bunks at anytime if under 14 years old.

If we feel your children are not respecting other customers, staff, the hostel or surrounds you will be asked to leave without refund.

Adult rates apply to young people 14 years and above.



Ambleside Backpackers Hostel is a quiet, relaxed place. We ask all guests to be quiet in and around the hostel after 11 pm.

There is a ‘1am curfew’ – no admittance to the hostel after 1am in the morning.

We expect you to show consideration to other guests, hostel staff, the hostel premises and our neighbors. We reserve the right to ask you to leave, without refund, if in the opinion of the hostel staff your presence is considered to be detrimental to any of the above.

No Smoking, vaping or use of ‘e’ cigarettes in the hostel or ground except in the designated smoking area.

Personal belongings within the hostel and grounds are your responsibility at all times.

Sorry no pets are allowed in the hostel.

Non-availability of accommodation – We would only cancel your holiday if, for reasons beyond our control, the accommodation here was unavailable. We would attempt to offer you alternative accommodation, however if this was not possible, or unacceptable to you, then we would refund all monies paid. Our liability would not extend beyond this refund.

The hostel opens for CHECK IN from 16.30 – 22.30. CHECK OUT on final day by 10.30 am. Normally luggage can be left at your risk after check out to be picked up later at the managers discretion. If arriving early and with much luggage please phone and we will arrange for you to drop off of luggage if we can.

To assist with cleaning & maintenance the hostel is closed between 10.30 and 14.30 each day. If you are very ill or the weather is really, really, really bad you may be allowed to use the lounge between these times – ask the manager.
