Changes to the hostel and bookings
The hostel has been ‘slimmed down’ by removal of some rooms and beds and changing some beds and some rooms into accommodation for weekly group / family rentals ONLY for the time being. Accommodation is for 9 -10 people with an option to add an additional 6 bed dormitory for 15/16 people maximum.
Even with all 16 beds occupied you will still have spacious cooking / dining facilities and a good size lounge too!
Please note; no stag or hen groups
There are 2 double rooms, a twin room, a double with a day bed, two single rooms and a 6 bed dorm that will allow most groups and families to find accommodation to suit their needs. If the building is to be occupied by a single sex group, it can accommodate 13 without the need to share beds. Please note that the maximum occupancy is 16 people and 1 or 2 dogs and no more!
Lake district accomodation;
A fantastic location for serious walking, cycling and open water swimming. Walk the Fairfield Horseshoe from the front door, Wansfell is just behind the building, Loughrigg Fell in front. Windermere lake is 10 minutes walk away.

Conveniently located just four minutes walking from the center of Ambleside, our hostel is the perfect base from which to explore the region. Enjoy the Lake District’s finest scenery and attractions from our location at the north end of Lake Windermere in ‘Cumbria’.
We offer accommodation for groups, family’s and family groups. From our building, car or bus users will be able to access all the Lake District National Park . You can easily access several of the Lake District’s famous lakes and fells on foot. Fit cyclists will be able to reach all the region’s well known attractions. Easy and and testing rides if you want them.

Our rooms are designed and furnished for the optimum combination of comfort and affordability. Relax and enjoy a deep night’s sleep in our quiet and comfortable double, twin, single and six-bed rooms. We can accommodate up to 16 people in some reasonable comfort. All of our rooms are heated and fitted with quality carpet, underlay, some have wash basins. All first floor rooms have fine fell views.
So although the hostel is smaller and you now enter through what was the kitchen door in days of old, you get more space per person and still the same great location right in the heart of Ambleside.
Wifi and a great location is included.
Cooking facilities and relaxing
Our building also includes full cooking facilities in a large well appointed kitchen and a fine dining room and comfy lounge with a wood burner and TV.
Bedrooms and washing facilities.
On the first floor accommodation is as follows; a King size double room, a single room, a twin room, a king size double room with day bed. A fully tiled and fitted shower room with sink and w.c,, a further two shower rooms each with two showers (More hostel in style but good showers none the less)and a bath room!. There are also two w.c’s on the first floor.
On the second floor there is a double room, a single room and a 6 bed bunk room (normally locked unless the extra beds are booked) and 2 further w.c’s and 2 more showers. Plenty of facilities so you should not have too long to wait for a shower or w.c or a shower at any time while staying here.
Outside there is a wash room with washing machine and tumble dryer. Could also be used to store a couple of bikes if required.
There is parking for 3 cars (or 2 mini buses) on the premises for Iveing Cottage North.
From the car park 2 steps down, or from the road there are 2 steps up, then from either way, 4 steps down to the entrance door.
Entry is then through a large level lobby with coat hooks, small hand wash sink and clothes drying facilities/dehumidifier.
Level entry to kitchen and through passage to dining room and stairs. 1 step down into lounge.
Stairs to first floor; 6 steps up to 1/2 landing and a further 7 steps up to first floor. First floor is level and there is room for a wheel chair in all bedrooms on first floor. Small step up to ‘luxury shower room’ and step into shower. Each of the twin shower rooms have steps up into the cubicles. the two w.c’s are level entry but quite small.
Stairs to second floor; 6 steps up to 1/2 landing and 7 further steps up to second floor. Small step down into double room. Single room and 6 bed room both have level entry. Both w.c’s on second floor have level entry and one is quite spacious.
There is a fire escape from the first floor which has 5 steps down to the exit door. From the second floor there is a fire escape with 12 steps down, a landing and then 4 more steps down into the car park level.
We are very sorry but we can not easily make this place wheelchair friendly, however we have had several wheelchair users stay here in the past but it has to be said – they enjoyed a challenge!.
There is also further free on street parking near Iveing Cottage.

The hostel is a good base for accessing outdoor activities of all types in the Lake District World Heritage Centre. As well as family and friends groups we have had youth groups, D of E award groups, mountain leader training groups, educational groups, university field trips, senior school parties, university outings, religious groups, firefighters, forces and international study groups.
