Changes at Ambleside Backpackers
The on-line booking system is open for bookings from April 2015 when we re-open.
All new bookings from late March 2015 when we re-open will be subject to a midnight curfew
- no admission to the building after midnight! (sorry, this applies to planning to arrive after midnight too except by very special arrangement for extreeme atheletic endurance events, Lakes 100, Fred Whitton etc.)
If you want to stay out late drinking, please find somewhere else to stay, 99% of our customers like a good nights sleep, so if you are part of the less than 1% night owls who sometimes come here that like to be up until 4am, I am afraid you will no longer be welcome to stay here.
If you need a cigarette during the night, you might like to think about other places to stay as you will not be able to regain entry to the hostel from the designated outside smoking area after midnight either.
We are closing for a few months to change things here, reducing the number of beds, some new facilities –

The reviews below are from our on line booking system, Guestlink.
The hostel is a good base for outdoor activities of all types, we get youth groups, D of E award groups, mountain leader training groups, educational groups, university field trips, senior school parties, university outings and international study groups. You can set aside small rooms for professor, teacher, leader accommodation and or coach drivers. There is free PSV parking near the hostel and parking for up to 3 mini busses in the hostel car park.
Although not good for large schools we can accommodate student groups of up to 30 students in comfort (relative term), the dining room can then be used for briefings and lectures. Particularly in the autumn and spring seasons hiring the hostel as a 38 bed whole hostel booking may well suit small specialist student, youth or outdoor studies groups. We do not supply or cater for evening meals or packed lunches here -however there are outside catering firms and purveyors of packed lunch and take away food who will be pleased to give you prices for supplying you during your stay. If only one or two nights, how about a hog roast?
Field trip accommodation
We often have students doing a long summer field study staying here. We need to know and agree in advance long stays -and please if you are studying geology – no more that 20 kg of rock samples per student stored in the dorms please!
Bunk houses and camping barns.
Bit like hotels in reverse – bunk houses and camping barns are quite close to hostel accommodation in many ways. There are always choices to be made about where to stay, we have tried to outline some similarities or differences – if you follow the links.
Cheap Bed and breakfast?
Enjoy our delicious daily self-serve breakfast before you head out for the famous fells and walking trails of the Lake District. We serve a selection of cereals, toast, preserves and tea and coffee for you to chose from every morning for your enjoyment. So yes it is cheap B&B, you get a bed to sleep in and a perfectly normal light self serve breakfast to go with it. There is also tea and coffee (fair trade) morning and evening while the kitchen is open.
Did you search for cheap hotels and ended up here – well do not leave just yet. – have a look at what we have to offer, you may find that Ambleside Backpackers is a viable alternative to a cheap hotel! Just so you know the difference – its mainly about meals and beds – we do not do evening meals, which hotels do, but there is plenty of choice of places to eat in Ambelside, but all our beds are bunk beds, which hotels do not normally do. With many restaurants and places to eat within just 10 minutes walk, and there is plenty of choice on price and menu just down the road. Not a hotel but probably a very good alternative to many budget hotels around the county of Cumbria -and we are right in the hearty of “The Lakes”.
Budget self catering holiday let.
As this building was (still is really) a very large house, it is also a good option as a very large holiday let. There is a every thing you normally get in a holiday cottage except luxury bedrooms and facilities. Fantastic lounge, large dining room, commercial style kitchen for massive catering needs and 10 / 11 bedrooms with either 60 beds or 8 bedrooms with 40 beds. Having been a self catering holiday let user most of my life, I would say this is better than a lot we have stayed in! (but I am biased)
